Wholewheat Pizza Crust

Pizza is something everyone loves. So don’t cut it out completely! Try this healthy homemade wholewheat pizza crust. Soft and fluffy on the inside but nice and crispy on the outside. One million times better for you than any takeaway pizza with lots of whole grain goodness!

What you need (makes 2 large pizzas)

  • 1 tsp coconut sugar
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • 360ml warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 420g whole wheat flour

What to do

  1. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with a hook attachment, combine the sugar, yeast, and warm water. Stir it around and let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the olive oil, honey, and salt. Mix by hand with a whisk or with the dough hook on low speed for 30 seconds.
  3. Add 3 cups of whole wheat flour and mix with the dough hook on low speed or with a large rubber spatula until dough starts to come together.
  4. Once mixed, knead for 5 minutes by hand on a lightly floured surface or with your dough hook on low-medium speed.
  5. If your dough is too wet, add up to 1/3 – 1/4 cup more whole wheat flour.
  6. Shape the dough into a ball and place in a large mixing bowl coated lightly with olive oil. Cover tightly with cling film and leave in a warm place for 1-2 hours. Your dough should have doubled in size.
  7. Punch the dough down to release the air. It will deflate and then cut the dough into two.
  8. Roll each half into a ball and let rest in bowls lightly covered with plastic wrap or aluminum foil for at least 20 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 220 degrees. Grease and dust 2 pieces of baking paper or pizza pans with nonstick spray or with olive oil. Sprinkle with polenta and a little wholewheat flour.
  10. After 20 minutes, flatten and roll out each ball of dough 1 at a time on a lightly floured surface or directly onto your cornmeal lined pizza pan/baking sheet.
  11. To prevent a soggy base, brush the top lightly with olive oil.
  12. The fun part!!! Top with your favorite toppings 🙂
  13. Bake for 15 minutes or until the crust is lightly browned. Now eat your pizza!!!!
